Types of Newspapers

As another part of market research we wanted to research abit into the different types of Newspapers there are in the market today as we wasnt quite cleary of the differences between each and will also help us to decide what type of Newspaper we want to produce so it will be suitable for our audience.

The frequency of publication for newspapers or how oftenthe are produced can be either daily, weekly or sunday supplements.

DAILY NEWSPAPERS:
  • These newspapers are issued everyday and depending on the Newspaper itself they usaully have no sunday editions.
  • Daily newspaper such as The Sun The daily Mirrior and star The Metro The daily mail The Guardian The lite all of which have online websites where you can go and look at the actual paper in more detail.

WEEKLY NEWSPAPERS:

  • These are publish once or twice a week and have smaller circulation than a daily newspaper would but share similar information such as sport and local news The Times

SUNDAY SUPLLEMENTS:

  • Only come out on sunday and are not produce during the week The news of the world the sunday mirrior and telegraph.

Newspapers also come in differnt sizes such as tabloids and broadsheets and the differents between them are major they focus on different sorts of news, types and styles of writing and aim to attract completly different audiences.

TABLOID (Standard):

  • These newspapers tend to be of a smaller format like weekly or daily newspapers such as the sun and the metro who also have internet based site the also display entertaiment and news.

An example of this is shown below

BROADSHEETS (SCMP):

  • Are the largest format of all Newspapers uaslly known for these long vertical pages, with only one braodsheet Newspaper Telegraph and two weekly Sundaty Telegraph and the Sunday times.

An example of this is:

  • The differences between these newspapers are very clear The Sun(tabloid)
is much smaller than the Daily Telegraph (broadsheet)
  • The layout is very different as there are much more pictures on each page to catch peoples attention more and to keep them intrested throughout the Newspaper.
  • There may also be more picture within a Tabloid paper as it aimed at a young more working class audience so they can relate what there reading to the picture to add extra to the article itself.
  • Less writing is also a common to Tabloid Newspaper with only a short account with each picture to give readers brief accounts of topics talked about, as you can read through articles within 5 minutes and can still get a clear understandingof issues and gossip even though it doesn't go into much depth.
  • The Broadsheet Newspaper have a lot of writing and go into much more depth and greater deatil about topics and sometimes can take up a big proportion of a pages.
  • The layout in The Telegraph is also very cramed together, compact and lacks space and has consitent use of small writing throughout a page which may be because of the target audeince or to meet audiceneces needs and give them what there paying for as Broadsheet papers are much higher in price than an average Tabloid paper like the Sun would be.
  • Graphology, there is a lack of pictures relating to articles and very limited contents and advertisements within a page.
  • However, although Broadsheets lack in areas that tabloid excel in for example pictures they can afford to do this as there Newspapers are so big they can fit everything in they need to to meet consumers needs, with the highest selling Bristish Quality Newspaper this year and a circulation of 842,912.
  • Our own Newspaper is going to be a tabloid as the layout and the structure of tabloids today are more suitable for a young audiences rather than the educated broadsheet look that most probaly wouldn't attract their attention.
  • We want our newspaper to be bright so it stand out on shelves amoung other magazines, Bold with excting headline to catcht consumers attention for example puns with lots of pictures.

We also found into our research on Newspapers that they come under different catergories for example there are red tops, middle market and quality.

Red Tops:

  • These are newspapers that have red mastheads such as the sun, daily mirror daily star and local newspapers ,prodviding consumers with details of entertainment sports celebrities and political scandal and all come under the tabloid format.
  • These Newspapers are aimed at a younger audience and people who are less educated including topinc like lots of picture, stories, higher proportion of sports coverage and gossip.

Middle Market:

  • These types of Newspapers cater for thos who want entertainment and sufficient enough information about world evnts and news, which are paper like the Daily mail and express.
  • These Newspapers are more for middle class people who have higher incomes and areof an older age.

Quality:

  • Are newspapers with local new but also with hard fact to back up issues talked about, political and financial news, current affairs, lower proportion of picture and supplements included and are older for more professional people.
  • Newspaper such as the guardian, the times, independant and finacial times.
