Newspaper Names

We decided to brainstorm The names we came up with for our newspaper so we could see which would be better suited for our target audience which is fifteen to 18 years old. We have also decided to ask people what they think is the best name for a newspaper aimed at them and to allow us to make the right decision when selecting our final masthead.

The ideas we have came up with so far are:
  • Terminal

  • Platinum

  • Mega

  • Flava
  • Youth weekly

  • Heat
  • weekly newz
Our responses showed that the majority of people in our age barrier preferred the name Flava. They said the reason for this decision was because its very informal and has an exciting tone to it that would definitely encourage them to pick up the newspaper. Our lowest response was weekly newz as many of the teenagers we asked believed it sounds boring and unenthusiastic which wouldn't really draw them to a newspaper as it would make them think of serious news which older age groups would enjoy.

We therefore concluded that we are going to name our newspaper flava as it means were giving consumers what they want but also guaranteed to receive a high readership. We have now decided we are going to come up with different designs for our masthead to try and get the right feel for a youthly audiences, so we are going to use the Microsoft programme photo shop to try and find the right font for our magazines and then after we have agreed on the font try and find the right colours to make the name attractive and stand out from other newspapers.
Our try and tested masthead design for our newspaper:
We felt that using ten different font design will enable us to get the best out of our newspaper and give us a broad enough option to pick the right design for our newspaper so that we get teenagers attention
The colours we experimented with for our masthead:

The final font we have chosen to use as we thought it was the most informal yet stylist font to suit the articles we are going to be bringing to our target audiences attention.

After picking our design we went on to fiddling with different colours and styles on photoshop to see which ones would stand out on our front page

From these five we the decided to pick 2 styles.

Sarah: pink and red

Korri: Blue

We choose these designs as we believe that they are completely different from other newspaper mastheads we have seen. They also meet our target audiences needs of having a young informal and colourful design. We also noticed that red tops such as The Star, The Sun and The News of The world all have red masthead where the background of the masthead is red and the name of the newspaper in capital letters in white so that it stands out to consumers. Using this technique is not only successful but very attractive as when we went into shop to buy newspapers for our analysis the ones that stood out to us most were the red tops as they immediately caught our eye due to using the colour red. The Woodford and Wanstead guardian use the colour green on there masthead which again is a bright colour that will definitely stand out on the white background colour of the paper. We also found that the metro newspaper use the same method as the sun by having a bold background colour and the the name of the paper in white which enhance the paper at first sight and makes it more attractive than other newspapers. The ilford recorder use red for the masthead which again make a difference to the paper and makes it much more appealing. Through researching into other mastheads that are more informal in the market today allowed us to know and understanding that even if our newspaper has a brigth masthead it will still look like a newspaper and will still be brought read and enjoy just like dull mastheads newspaper such as the times. We both choose bright colours with a White outline to make it more trendy and appealing and wanted to make our difference from the sun or the metro where they have red and blue on the outside and white on the inside but to have our the opposite way with white as a border and red and blue as the inside colours to create and make our a coompletly new product.
